The most prominent feature in the canyon"Spider Woman" is steeped in ancient myths passed on by oral tradition. It is believed that she taught the early people the art of weaving. Canyon de Chelly contains approximately 265 ruins and has the highest concentration of rock art of any other site in the U.S. This area is protected and preserved by the National Park Service and its land is still owned by many Navajo families.
